You probably don't see it day to day, but your firm is creating a ripple effect, one that stretches far beyond your clients or your team. It's touching families, communities, and people you'll never meet. And the strength of that ripple effect, the impact that exists because of your firm this year, says a lot about the true health of your business. And today, we're going to slow down and look at that together. This is the perfect time of year to reflect if you're watching this when it actually gets released. So, let's dive in.
Welcome to The Law Firm Owner Podcast, powered by Velocity Work, for owners who want to grow a firm that gives them the life they want. Get crystal clear on where you're going, take planning seriously, and honor your plan like a pro. This is the work that creates Velocity.
Hi everyone. Welcome back to this week's episode. I want to take a few minutes today to zoom out with you. You've spent this year leading, solving, building, adjusting, all in service of a better firm. And when you're in it every day, it's easy to lose sight of what the work actually creates. Because your effort doesn't just move numbers, it moves people. It moves lives. And the truth is, the ripple effect of your firm reaches much further than you can see.
The business you've built, this firm, is a living, breathing entity. It's not a static machine. It's an organism that interacts with people, it shapes experiences, and it leaves a wake wherever it goes. And every decision you've made, every system, every hire, every conversation that contributes to that wake. The effort you've poured in to building this thing has generated momentum that touches clients, families, team members, and communities.
So here's your invitation. Take 5 quiet minutes and do what I call an impact audit. This isn't about numbers on a dashboard; it's about seeing that ripple effect that exists because of your firm and because your firm exists. As this is coming out live, it's a really good time to reflect on the year that you're closing up.
When you look back at the year that you've had, I want you to ask yourself a few questions. One, who is better off because this firm exists? The second question, who got an opportunity because of this firm? Third, where did this firm bring more calm, clarity, or stability into someone's world?
And don't filter it. Just start naming what is coming to mind. It's sometimes hard. You almost feel like you're patting yourself on the back. I'll talk more about that in a minute. That's not what this is about. Just answer the questions. And also, don't just think about your clients. I really do want you to think broadly when you are considering those questions.
Now, there's layers of impact here. So, for example, the client who finally has peace of mind, that's first-order impact. The team member who has grown in confidence, that's first-order impact. The vendor who's been able to hire another employee because of your consistency, that's first-order impact too. But it doesn't stop there, and this is what I want you to see. There are second and third-order impact and beyond.
Second-order impact is what those changes that you identified with the first order, it's what those changes create in their world. The confident team member shows up differently at home, more steady, more proud, more open. You know what that does in an environment? That's second-order impact. The client who feels more at peace and safe again is more present with their kids, more generous with their time. The vendor who's thriving now supports another family.
Okay, so then third-order impact and beyond are the ripples from those ripples. The child who feels more secure because their parent is more calm. The friend who's inspired watching someone rebuild their life after a legal battle, that's third-order impact. The small business that survives because your client could refocus their energy. Listen, none of these people will ever know your firm's name, but they are all touched by its existence. That's the ripple effect of your work. That's what your business sets in motion every single day.
Here's why the impact audit matters. It's not just a feel-good reflection. It is truth-finding. The pattern of your firm's impact reveals the health of your business. A thriving firm creates strong, balanced ripple effect. Clients are well-served, team members are growing, the culture is solid, families benefit, and your community experiences benefit as well.
A struggling firm creates weak and often uneven ripples. So maybe clients are happy, but your team is exhausted. Maybe the team is thriving, but client outcomes are slipping. So either way, that imbalance is feedback. It's data.
This is why the impact audit matters. It gets you in tune with the truth of the health of your business. Impact is a signal of health. A strong, far-reaching ripple effect means your firm is healthy and it's alive. A shallow or one-sided ripple effect means it's time to recalibrate. And not from guilt, but from care, because when your firm thrives, the world around it thrives too.
So before you sprint into new goals or plans for the new year, pause here. Sit with the evidence of what your firm has already created and let it land. Your firm is alive. It's doing good work in the world. And the more aware of that truth, the stronger that your leadership becomes. And the ripple effect of your work, of your firm's existence, is already in motion. Your job is to notice it, it's to honor it, and then keep building from that grounded, truthful place.
